Anyone who finds the US child pageant scene strangely compelling will love this website - an online showcase for a digital photo retouching service.
Most people accept that a lot of photos used for magazine covers, beauty ads and so on are touched up or air-brushed to smooth out wrinkles, remove spots, whiten teeth and generally enhance the appearance of the model or celebrity to the point of perfection. However, this is very different.
The end result of photographic re-touching is, as far as I'm aware, normally intended to be believable - an unnatural process to a natural looking end. Even when the result is obviously impossible, (I'm thinking of a recent picture of Liza Minnelli that appeared in the Observer), the subject tends to at least look like an inhabitant of Earth.
Some of Kel's subjects have ended up looking like they're from a planet you wouldn't want to land on. You might want to orbit it though to get close enough to gorp at the strange and freaky inhabitants - part human and part nuclear-cosmetics-factory accident. Zoiks! I've just had a bad thought. What if someone in one of Kel's creations liked their new look so much they took it to a plastic surgeon and said, "Make me look like this"?
